World No Tobacco Day 2023
About World No Tobacco Day 2023
2023 Theme: We Need Food, Not Tobacco
The World Health Organization's theme for World No Tobacco Day 2023 focuses on the environmental impact of tobacco growing, production, and waste, highlighting how valuable land and resources are diverted from food production to tobacco cultivation.
World No Tobacco Day (WNTD) is observed around the world every year on May 31. It is intended to encourage a 24-hour period of abstinence from all forms of tobacco consumption around the globe. The day is further intended to draw attention to the widespread prevalence of tobacco use and to negative health effects, which currently lead to more than 8 million deaths each year worldwide, including 1.2 million deaths from exposure to second-hand smoke.
The 2023 campaign aims to:
- Raise awareness about alternative farming approaches and crops that are more sustainable than tobacco for farmers
- Expose the tobacco industry's efforts to interfere with attempts to substitute tobacco growing with sustainable crops
- Highlight the industry's efforts to "greenwash" its reputation by promoting activities under the guise of corporate social responsibility
Vision for Accelerated Sustainable Development Ghana has organized several activities and events to mark this important day and raise awareness about the harmful effects of tobacco use and the environmental impact of tobacco cultivation.
