PRESS STATEMENT: VAST-Ghana Demands Immediate Action on Food Industry Interference in Public Health Policy
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Vision for Accelerated Sustainable Development Ghana (VAST-Ghana) expresses deep concern over the escalating interference by food and beverage industries in public health policy-making processes across Ghana and the African continent.
Key Concerns Raised:
- Industry lobbying against front-of-package warning labels
- Corporate social responsibility programs targeting youth
- Funding of research that downplays health risks
- Partnership with government agencies on nutrition programs
"The food industry has adopted tactics directly from the tobacco industry's playbook, using corporate social responsibility initiatives, funded research, and strategic partnerships to undermine public health policies," said Labram Musah, Executive Director of VAST-Ghana.
Our Demands:
- Immediate implementation of front-of-package warning labels on ultra-processed foods
- Transparent disclosure of all industry funding to researchers and institutions
- Strengthened conflict of interest policies for public health advisory committees
- Enhanced monitoring of industry marketing practices targeting children
VAST-Ghana calls on the government to prioritize public health over corporate profits and implement evidence-based policies that protect Ghanaians from the harmful effects of ultra-processed foods.
