About World No Tobacco Day 2021

2021 Theme: Commit to Quit

The World Health Organization's theme for World No Tobacco Day 2021 is "Commit to Quit." This campaign aims to support 100 million people worldwide in their efforts to quit tobacco through various initiatives. The COVID-19 pandemic has led to millions of tobacco users wanting to quit, and this campaign will help empower them to make a successful quit attempt.

World No Tobacco Day (WNTD) is observed around the world every year on May 31. It is intended to encourage a 24-hour period of abstinence from all forms of tobacco consumption around the globe. The day is further intended to draw attention to the widespread prevalence of tobacco use and to negative health effects, which currently lead to more than 8 million deaths each year worldwide, including 1.2 million deaths from exposure to second-hand smoke.

The 2021 campaign aims to:

  • Highlight the health benefits of quitting tobacco
  • Inspire tobacco users to quit through cessation campaigns
  • Promote access to cessation services
  • Raise awareness about tobacco industry tactics
  • Empower tobacco users to make successful quit attempts through "quit & win" initiatives

Vision for Accelerated Sustainable Development Ghana has organized several activities and events to mark this important day and support tobacco users in their journey to quit.

Steps to Quit Tobacco

A guide to help you on your journey to quit tobacco

1

Prepare to Quit

Set a quit date within the next two weeks. Tell friends, family, and coworkers about your plan. Remove cigarettes and other tobacco products from your home, car, and workplace. Anticipate challenges, especially during the first few weeks.

2

Get Support

Seek support from healthcare providers, counseling services, telephone quitlines, or support groups. Consider using nicotine replacement therapy or other medications that can help you quit.

3

Learn New Skills and Behaviors

Distract yourself from tobacco cravings with physical activity. Practice relaxation techniques to manage stress. Change your routine to avoid triggers associated with smoking.

4

Be Prepared for Difficult Situations

Avoid alcohol as it can trigger cravings. Be careful around other tobacco users. Clean your house and car to remove the smell of smoke. Identify and plan for situations that may trigger urges to smoke.

5

Stay Committed

Remember the health and financial benefits of quitting. If you slip, don't give up. Learn from the experience and recommit to your goal. Celebrate your successes and milestones.
