About World No Tobacco Day 2022

2022 Theme: Tobacco's Threat to Our Environment

The World Health Organization's theme for World No Tobacco Day 2022 raises awareness about the environmental impact of tobacco – from cultivation, production, distribution and waste. The campaign aims to expose the tobacco industry's efforts to greenwash its reputation and products by marketing themselves as environmentally friendly.

World No Tobacco Day (WNTD) is observed around the world every year on May 31. It is intended to encourage a 24-hour period of abstinence from all forms of tobacco consumption around the globe. The day is further intended to draw attention to the widespread prevalence of tobacco use and to negative health effects, which currently lead to more than 8 million deaths each year worldwide, including 1.2 million deaths from exposure to second-hand smoke.

The 2022 campaign aims to:

  • Raise awareness about the environmental impact of tobacco from cultivation to waste
  • Provide the public with information about how the tobacco industry is harming the environment
  • Expose the tobacco industry's greenwashing tactics and their attempts to improve their reputation
  • Highlight the environmental and economic burden of tobacco product waste

Vision for Accelerated Sustainable Development Ghana has organized several activities and events to mark this important day and raise awareness about the harmful effects of tobacco use on both human health and the environment.
